Course Description
Service-learning with P-12 students in diverse communities and/or schools. Consideration of history, definitions, and rationale of service-learning and analysis of research and outcomes. Required service-learning project implemented with P-12 students. Emphasis on how service can be incorporated into curriculum, with a primary focus on learning.

Non-Traditional Format
The course uses service-learning as the primary pedagogical tool for teaching course objectives. Students will work on a comprehensive service-learning project that employs skills and knowledge learned in the course. Students will be required to spend considerable time outside the classroom. Students will be engaged in the service-learning component for approximately 75- 100% of overall instructional time.

Course Objectives
Students in this course will: • Examine the concept, history, and rationale of/for service- learning. • Analyze service-learning research, methodologies, and potential outcomes. • Formulate, interpret, and evaluate best practices in service- learning project construction and implementation. • Analyze the purposes and demonstrate methods of integrating critical reflection into service-learning. • Investigate issues relating to community partnerships in academic service-learning. • Conceptualize, plan and implement service-learning experiences with P-12 students. • Develop a plan for integrating service-learning into their academic and professional careers.
