Latinx in the United States


Course Description

Latinx culture through literature, film, and performance. Students will perfect their speaking and writing skills in Spanish through the critical analysis of Latinx poetry, fiction, memoirs, spoken word, and media. Given in Spanish.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will consider, engage, and analyze opposing viewpoints or arguments on current debates regarding Latina/o/x youth coming-of age in the U.S. and the process and challenges of coming-of-age, including intergenerational trauma.
  • Students will evaluate the credibility of information regarding social, political and historical events that have shaped the lives of Latina/o/x youth.
  • Students will support one’s own conclusion, decision, or action with sound reasoning and judgment as part of one’s understanding and appreciation of historical, literary and cultural texts of Latina/o/x youth.
  • Students will interpret inferences and develop subtleties of symbolic and indirect discourse in Latina/o/x texts.
  • Students will recognize ethical issues and apply different ethical perspectives to dilemmas in communities of Latina/o/x youth coming of age.
  • Students will analyze the impact of socio-historical, political, and economic structures and contexts on understandings of race, ethnicity, gender, and socio-economic class on the coming-of-age processes of young Latinas/os/xs.
  • Students will reflect upon how one’s social identities and roles shape one’s worldview and interactions with others through the study of critical dialogues with writers and artists whose works portray the experiences and challenges of coming-of-age Latinxs in the U.S.
  • Students will develop an awareness, appreciation, and knowledge of cultures and communities beyond one’s own, particularly of Latina/o/x youth coming of age in the U.S.
  • Students will engage in meaningful, concrete, well-grounded, and current discussions affecting Latina/o/x youth coming-of-age in the U.S.

  • - A historical overview of Ethnic Studies in the United States, focusing on the emergence of Latino/a Studies in American universities.
  • - Chicano Renaissance 1960-72: analysis of literary texts that make up the sub-field of Chicano literature in the context of the social movements that inspire them.
  • - Border theories. A postcolonial, cultural studies examination of the theories of border identities, border thinking, and border
  • - Latina Feminism. An introduction to the theory of Latina feminism in dialogue with contemporary novels and short essays.
  • -Transnational encounters. Study of notions of transnational communities through the work of Latino/a Caribbean writers.
