Course Description
Basic ecology, management, and restoration of the longleaf pine
ecosystem. Topics will include longleaf history, conservation
status, and fire ecology. Discussion and hands-on application
of management and restoration techniques for overstory,
understory, and wildlife.
                                Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
An additional written report will be required for graduate
students. For example:
 - A case study on a longleaf management/restoration plan for a
hypothetical property.
 - A topical paper or literature review related to longleaf.
 - Other ideas from course instructor or Jones Center
cooperators.

                                - Students will be able to explain and discuss the basic ecology of longleaf pine ecosystems, including site-type and regional variations, the role of fire in structuring the ecosystem, and the conservation status of longleaf pine, including wildlife species of concern.
- Students will learn to consider multiple forest, wildlife, and conservation objectives and to design management approaches that integrate these objectives.
- Students will have an understanding of longleaf pine silviculture, including even and uneven-aged management systems and how these meet specific management objectives.
- Students will learn how prescribed fire is utilized in ongoing management of longleaf pine.
- Students will learn restoration techniques for longleaf pine overstory and understory from a range of starting conditions.
