Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will demonstrate the ability to initiate, sustain, and conclude conversations on a range of familiar topics in Portuguese. Through interactive tasks, they will negotiate meaning, clarify misunderstandings, and propose solutions to simple social incidents with increasing fluency and confidence. Students will apply appropriate linguistic and cultural strategies to ensure mutual understanding and demonstrate respect for different perspectives.
  • Students will construct coherent oral and written narratives to describe events and express needs, preferences, uncertainty, and opinions using a variety of verb tenses and moods, including the subjunctive. By engaging in storytelling, and discussion-based tasks, students will interpret and convey information about their personal lives, communities, and the Portuguese-speaking world. They will evaluate how linguistic choices and cultural contexts influence the expression of meaning.
  • Students will produce and deliver clear, organized, and purpose-driven communication across colloquial, professional, and academic contexts in accordance with their level. Through guided writing and oral assignments, including short presentations, cross-cultural analyses, and the development of professional biographies, and cover letters, students will adapt language, tone, and format to fit specific audiences and communicative goals. They will demonstrate accuracy, coherence, and cultural appropriateness in both oral and written modes.
  • Students will analyze and compare key geographical, historical, and cultural elements of Portugal with those of their own culture. Through research, class discussions, and presentations, students will interpret and explain the significance of topics such as fado, Arabic influence in Portugal, soccer, and major historical and artistic figures. They will synthesize information that demonstrate appreciation of Portugal’s cultural identity and awareness of how cultural differences shape communication and perspectives.
