Course Description
This course builds upon the concepts learned in Civil Engineering Project Management. This course provides a detailed study of the processes and procedures used in the cost estimation as well as in the planning process for typical civil engineering projects, including, for example, transportation, site preparation, and structures projects.

Course Objectives
By the end of this course, students will have an understanding of: 1) How to identify and categorize the key components that go into estimating an engineering project 2) The standard project cost estimation categories and procedures for estimating each of these 3) How to visualize and identify the key steps in planning a project 4) The use of software project planning and tracking tools 5) The critical need to develop accurate project cost estimates and plans
Topical Outline
1) Identifying the project materials, equipment, engineering design, construction labor and other miscellaneous components involved with implementing a typical civil engineering project 2) Procedures for estimating the cost of each of these major components of a project 3) The project planning process 4) Breaking down a project into steps 5) A review of the analytical tools available for developing project planning, the inputs needed, and how to interpret the output results 6) How to recognize the critical path in a project and methods to help alleviate problems that may arise 7) Case studies that will give students experience in applying project cost estimation and planning techniques to engineering products
