Prerequisite
CVLE 3420 and CVLE 3610
Semester Course Offered
Offered every year.
Grading System
A - F (Traditional)
Course Objectives
This course introduces the student to the design of foundations and earth retaining structures. On completion of this course, the student should be able to: • Determine the strength of soils appropriate for a given foundation or earth retaining structure from known site and soil properties • Analyze and design simple shallow foundations, deep foundations and earth retaining structures in accordance with relevant design standards • Enumerate key steps in the methods used to construct foundations and earth retaining structures
Topical Outline
• Soil mechanics – stresses and strength • Site investigations –loads, soil properties, site conditions • Design of shallow foundations (spread footing, slab-on-grade and mat foundations) • Design of deep foundations (piles) • Design of earth retaining structures • Introduction to site improvement
