Course Objectives
This course introduces the student to the design of structural steel elements and simple systems subjected to stresses arising due to a combination of axial, flexural, shear and torsional loads. On completion of this course, the student should be able to use relevant design standards and: • Design structural steel components, including beam-columns, plate girders and continuous beams • Design elements subjected to torsional effects • Analyze and design composite steel-concrete elements • Design simple structural steel systems involving braced and unbraced frames • Design eccentric connections • Perform plastic analysis and design rigid frames
Topical Outline
• Beam-columns • Plate girders • Design for torsion • Composite steel-concrete members • Braced and unbraced frames • Eccentric connections • Rigid frames – plastic analysis and design • Steel hollow structural sections (HSS)
