Course Description
Gene cloning techniques, gene expression, mutagenesis, isolation, structure, chemical analysis, enzymology of DNA, DNA sequencing, RNA interference.
Athena Title
TECH MOLEC GENETICS
Prerequisite
BCMB(BIOL)(CHEM) 3100 or permission of department
Semester Course Offered
Offered fall
Grading System
A - F (Traditional)
Course Objectives
Because all disciplines in the biological sciences now commonly depend on the isolation and characterization of specific fragments of DNA, graduate students will understand the biochemical basis of gene cloning technology. Students will learn the basic properties of DNA, the tools that are used to clone DNA fragments, as well as the procedures used for analyzing and expressing information encoded in the cloned DNA. Students will also learn additional cutting edge techniques involved in modern molecular genetics.
Topical Outline
1. Historical Overview and DNA Structure 2. DNA Separation Methods/Chemical Synthesis of DNA 3. Restriction Enzymes/Modification Systems 4. DNA polymerases/Reverse Transcriptases 5. DNA and RNA Ligases/Polynucleotide Kinase/Posphatases/Terminal Transferases 6. Cloning Vectors/Cloning Straegies
