Structural Equation Modeling for Family and Social Sciences


Course Description

This course focuses on latent variable modeling techniques. Topics include confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation models, and means and covariance structures. Students will learn appropriate use of these techniques as they are applied in the family and social sciences. Students will learn to fit models using statistical software packages.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will acquire an understanding of how SEM (and related latent variable models) can be used in human development and other social and behavioral research.
  • Students will gain an appreciation of the conceptual and, at least at a basic level, the mathematical, basis of SEM.
  • Students will develop the ability to formulate and evaluate models with your own data.
  • Students will become proficient in using Lavaan or another software package for the analysis of models.
  • Students will gain the ability to understand and critically evaluate research articles using SEM.
  • Students will gain the skills necessary to conduct and write publishable research reports using SEM.
  • Students will gain the foundations upon which to learn more advanced SEM topics.
