Research Internship in Financial Planning, Housing and Consumer Economics


Course Description

Supervised experience in qualitative and/or quantitative research in a topic area related to financial planning, housing and consumer economics.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students are expected to conduct an independent research project. This includes conceptualization, analysis, and dissemination of their findings through publication or presentation. Students may use existent data or newly collected data.

Course Objectives

1) Students will expand their existing knowledge base in housing and consumer economics, research methods, analysis, and/or program evaluation. 2) Students will develop analytical skills. 3) Students will develop presentation skills and present their research. 4) Students will complete the certification for conducting research with human subjects; students who have already completed the certification will demonstrate their knowledge of the expectations for such research. 5) Through work with research mentors, students will demonstrate knowledge of the expectations for professionalism in research and expand their understanding of the role of research in building a housing and consumer economics body of knowledge, the application of research to community programs and public policy, and options for careers involving research.


Topical Outline

1) Select research topic in consultation with research mentor. 2) Prepare or review with research mentor a statement of the research question. 3) Conduct a review of the literature. 4) Learn/Review requirements to work with human subjects data. 5) Identify and/or collect data. 6) Analyze data. 7) Prepare research paper and/or analytical reports. 8) Review presentation skills. 9) Present research. 10) Complete and submit logs. 11) Complete and submit mid-term and final self-rating evaluation.
