Course Description

Performance of choral literature for mixed voices from all periods of music history, including sacred, secular, folk, and popular music.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to occasionally lead sectional rehearsals and mentor undergraduates.

Course Objectives

The student will be able to: *demonstrate an advanced and flexible vocal technique and musicianship capable of meeting the stylistic and timbral requirements of choral music from throughout Western Art Music as well as music from other cultures. *perform and rehearse at a professional level, including self- instruction of pitches and rhythms in and out of rehearsals. *demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of selected repertoire. *demonstrate mastery of foreign language diction of selected repertoire.


Topical Outline

Topics will include: *Criteria for top-level artistic performance *Highest-quality vocal tone (clarity and resonance) incorporating principles cultivated for soloistic singing, and balanced with the choral aesthetic's attention to uniformity of vowel, intonation, and tone *Highest-quality artistry and musicianship that is attuned to phrasing, syllabic emphasis, text expressivity and intelligibility, and dramatic communication *Critique and analysis of selected repertoire *Self-critique of individual and ensemble in rehearsals and following performances *Ability to perform in all styles and genres *Ability to connect ensemble rehearsal techniques and interpretative principles to individual practice patterns of solo repertoire
