Course Description

An introduction to floral design and management, including the principles and elements of design. Students apply the principles of design and management through laboratory activities. Students explore industry scope and potential. The principles of biology will be applied in the preservation and quality characteristics of floral products.

Course Objectives

This course serves as an opportunity for students to: 1.Explore the economic importance of the floral industry. 2.Trace the marketing and distribution systems for floral products. 3.Explain the processes of product pricing and related business issues in marketing floral products. 4.Assess the importance of holidays and special occasions in the marketing of floral products. 5.Describe the characteristics of European and Oriental floral art that influenced the development of American (Western) floral design. 6.Compare the impact of social customs of selected historical periods and peoples of the world on floral design. 7.Define the principles and elements of design as used in floral compositions. 8.Construct creative and aesthetically pleasing floral compositions, including single floral arrangements and commercial displays such as setups for banquets, business floral art, and window/store displays. 9.Demonstrate how the elements and principles of design combine to create an aesthetically pleasing and effective floral composition. 10.Develop skills in the evaluation of floral compositions, cut flowers, potted plants, and related floral materials. 11.Demonstrate knowledge of the biological principles involved in floral product processing and care. 12.Provide for the proper selection, handling, and care of floral products for maximum design functionality and display longevity. 13.Create interpretive floral compositions utilizing personal expression enhancements. 14.Demonstrate proficient use of the materials, mechanics, and tools used in floral composition. 15.Identify flowers, foliages, materials, and related items used in the floral industry.
