Video Concepts and Practice


Course Description

An introduction to time-based means of visual expression through video and other constructs. Students will develop technical skills using digital capture and editing, developing proficiency concerning the role of light, space, time, composition, editing, and sequencing, within a conceptual framework of ideas, expression, and communication.

Course Objectives

Students will demonstrate an understanding of concepts as well as proficiency in the covered time-based techniques through technically- and conceptually-based assignments, presenting their work in the context of historical and contemporary practices within the medium. Students will be expected to engage other students' work with dialogue that is stylistically appropriate and mature. During critiques, students will learn to communicate for academic and professional contexts, supporting a consistent purpose and point of view while considering and engaging opposing views. Classroom discussions, readings, lectures, gallery visits, screenings, research projects, and critiques will expose students to the conceptual framework of historical and contemporary practices of the intersection of still photography and video art.

Video and audio capture: hardware, applications and techniques. 5. Video editing software, applications and techniques. 6.
