Epidemiology Doctoral Seminar


Course Description

Provides doctoral students an opportunity to be exposed to topics directly relevant to their graduate school experience and future academic opportunities. In addition, this course includes a journal club component where students will critique landmark epidemiologic papers and other topical papers chosen by various faculty members.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, students will have been exposed to practical skill discussions that relate to their success as doctoral students and answer some of their questions related to future academic success and activities. In addition, students will learn to critically discuss peer-reviewed journal articles and be exposed to important landmark epidemiology papers. Specifically, students will: • Gain knowledge and understanding of higher-level epidemiologic concepts from faculty members through journal club discussions surrounding advanced epidemiologic methods and research papers • Apply their epidemiologic training during article discussions with faculty members and peers • Experience and evaluate topical presentations by faculty members on academic success, including grant funding strategies, dissertation writing, and manuscript preparation • Synthesize knowledge from presenters and journal club experiences to improve overall epidemiologic understanding and future success in the Ph.D. program and dissertation writing experiences
