Principles of Communication Systems


Course Description

Introduces a basic understanding of communication systems. Both analog and digital communication systems will be covered. Topics include amplitude and frequency modulation, baseband communication, digital transmission, noise and error correction, and layer network models.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be assigned advanced home assignment problems and advanced exam problems.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to analyze simple analog communication systems.
  • Students will be able to analyze simple digital communication systems.
  • Students will be able to describe the common communication systems and modulation formats in use today and explain the functions of each component in the system.
  • Students will be able to describe how noise and interference affect communication.
  • Students will be able to state and explain the major technical considerations in the design of a communication system.
