Course Description
Methods and field experience for instrumental music education majors. Course involves effective teaching techniques, research in teaching/learning, and materials, including technology and multicultural materials.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to write a research paper and
present a research project on their findings. This project
should provide specific information pertaining to pedagogical
approaches related to the teaching and learning of public
school students that are being discussed in the course.

Course Objectives
1. Express a personal philosophy and rationale for instrumental music education; 2. Describe recruiting procedures useful for the school band and orchestra programs; 3. Discuss the content and sequencing of curricula in instrumental music; 4. Exhibit growth in teaching skills by completing in-field and in-class teaching experiences; 5. List materials and literature used for instrumental music instruction at the secondary school level; 6. Write pedagogically appropriate lesson plans for secondary instrumental music instruction; 7. Demonstrate techniques for teaching and rehearsing secondary instrumental music ensembles and related classes; 8. Describe ways to implement national and state music standards in instrumental music education through the principles of comprehensive musicianship; 9. Describe methods for locating and evaluating the suitability of instrumental music literature; 10. Explain the general procedures for budgeting, requisitioning, and purchasing as it applies to school music programs; 11. Describe procedures for promoting the music program through public relations/advocacy techniques; 12. Discuss procedures for implementing fundraising programs in the music program; 13. Describe the roles and management of music booster organizations; 14. Discuss basic procedures for traveling with music groups; 15. Exhibit organizational skills through the assembly of a resource/curriculum binder.
Topical Outline
Students will: 1. Attend Practicum Seminar, observe a class in a public school one hour per week, teach formal lessons in a public school, and keep a well-organized notebook with lesson plans, reflection essays, and evaluation/observation forms. 2. Complete the assigned readings, take notes on the readings, and participate in class discussions based on the readings. 3. Develop a personal statement of purpose to reflect the student's views on important issues related to secondary instrumental music teaching. 4. Evaluate 3 middle school and 3 high school handbooks. Write a report on your assessment of these handbooks and present an overview of the assessment to the class. 5. Create a comprehensive curriculum design project to be used in the middle school and/or high school instrumental music classroom. 6. Teach 2 mini-lessons, approximately 30 minutes each, during class.
