Data Analysis and Statistical Inference in Social Work I


Course Description

First of two courses in applied statistics emphasizing applications in social work research, including univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses of quantitative data. Topics include frequency distributions, central tendency and dispersion, cross tabulation, mean differences, simple linear regression, statistical inference, hypothesis testing, and use of statistical software to conduct analyses.

Course Objectives

1. Utilize descriptive statistics to summarize data; 2. Understand and communicate the principles of statistical inference, including parameter estimation, confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing; 3. Understand, communicate, and apply the appropriate use of bivariate statistical tests; 4. Communicate the results of statistical analyses; 5. Draw substantive conclusions from the results of hypotheses tests; 6. Understand the use of SPSS software.
