Research in Coaching and Coach Education


Course Description

A review and analysis of current research and practice in coaching and coach education. Particular attention is given to topical trends in the literature and application of findings to the practices of coaching and coach development. Field work will apply the principles learned in class to "real-world" experience.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to complete a meta-analysis on a pertinent topic in coaching science that is of sufficient quality for publication. Specifically, Graduate students will be required to identify an important current issue in coaching or coach education and complete a meta-analysis of the completed research over the last 10-20 years on this topic, including any seminal studies or theories. The review must include citations of at least 30 research studies. The final manuscript should conform to APA Style and be of sufficient quality for submission to an academic journal such as Quest or the International Journal of Coaching and Sport Science. Specifically, Graduate students will be required to identify an important current issue in coaching or coach education.

The student who successfully completes this course will be able to: 1. discuss the theoretical and empirical foundations that currently guide coaching practice and education; 2. identify sources of literature related to the study of coaching and coach education; 4. describe the professional opportunities and career development in coaching; 5. present information on certifications appropriate for coaching; 6. be informed about professional organizations directly related to coaching and coach education; 7. discuss the importance of scientific inquiry for coaching and be able to interpret research results.
