Course Objectives

To provide students with a conceptual and theoretical foundation To understand radical right politics in western democracies To introduce the students to case studies of radical right politics in various western countries To discover and explain the differences and similarities that exist among radical right politics in individual western countries


Topical Outline

The course consists of three parts. In the first part a historical overview is presented of radical right politics in the (western) world. This part addresses historical Fascism and National Socialism and their legacies on postwar western democracies. In the second part the radical right politics in contemporary western democracies will be discussed, most notably in Europe and North America. This part will include in-depth case studies of both western democratic countries and their main far right organizations. In the third and last part we will discuss various conceptual and theoretical issues concerning radical right politics in western democracies from a comparative perspective (e.g., gender, economic policies, international cooperation, violence).
