Course Objectives

The objective of Physiology of Lactation in Farm Animals is to understand the anatomy and physiology for milk synthesis and secretion in livestock species.


Topical Outline

Outline for the course/Expected learning outcomes 1. Describe anatomy and physiology of the mammary gland. 2. Understand mammary development from embryo to first lactation. 3. Outline the systemic and local mechanisms which contribute to mammary gland development and lactation. 4. Discuss the physiological, biochemical, cellular, and metabolic processes of milk synthesis and secretion. 5. Identify differences in milk composition among species (and breeds). 6.Describe development of the dairy industry as it relates to bovine milk. 7. Understand categories and processing for relevant dairy products.
