Global Health Internship


Course Description

Practical experience in global health through placement in appropriate international or domestic health related agencies.

Non-Traditional Format

The internship course is typically 150 hours of work for 3 credits, so 50 hours per credit hour. The work tasks would be agreed upon by the student, the instructor, the internship coordinator, and the internship supervisor before the internship begins and will involve activities directly related to public health’s core competencies.

Course Objectives

The student should be able to: • Examine the structure and functions of the participating agency. • Examine the global health impact of the agency’s activities. • Function effectively in a work environment with existing staff members and administrators. • Apply research and data gathering techniques. • Describe the agency’s administrative processes, including internal and external funding sources and management issues. • Examine the issues facing the world today which affect the health of the population. • Appreciate environmental as well as behavioral factors associated with disease prevention and health on a global scale. • Understand the global nature of health problems while in another country and the many cultural factors influencing the health of its population.
