Course Description
Linguistic, cultural, and literary structures in Portuguese-speaking societies. Emphasis is divided between students' abilities to express themselves fluently in oral and written Portuguese and to identify and contextualize main literary genres and movements. Given in Portuguese.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be responsible for leading class discussions on selected days and will be required to write a 15-20 page final research paper.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students will have completed an advance grammar review in oral and written Portuguese. Students will be familiar with cultural and literary structures of the Portuguese-speaking world and be able to conceptualize historical, literary, and cultural movements. Undergraduate students will write a minimum of three 4-5 page papers in addition to two exams. Oral presentations will be required of undergraduate and graduate students. Graduate students will write three 4-5 page papers plus a final research paper (15-30 pp). Given in Portuguese.
Topical Outline
Portuguese colonial influences in Brazil and Lusophone Africa. The role of the media in popular culture. Language similarities and differences between the cultures. The interrelationship of literary and intellectual movements in the creation of national identities.
