Course Description
Sedimentary processes in major siliciclastic and carbonate depositional environments. Factors affecting deposition and erosion of sediments on time scales of hundreds of years to hundreds of thousands of years.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:

Grading System
A - F (Traditional)
Course Objectives
Through lectures, textbook, and selected journal articles, students will learn the processes through which sediments accumulate over geologically long periods (>1000 years), with an emphasis on the processes of a wide range of modern sedimentary environments. Students will be able to interpret ancient sedimentary rocks in terms of their original sedimentary environments. Students will be evaluated on exams that emphasize critiques of the published scientific literature and on field exercises.
Topical Outline
Sequence stratigraphic principles (including accommodation, parasequences, parasequence sets, depositional sequences, and important stratal surfaces) Modern sedimentary environments - Alluvial - Eolian - Coastal - Shelf - Deep Sea - Lacustrine - Glacial - Volcanic - Carbonate - Evaporite
