English and Italian Lyric Diction

Course Description

Introductory lyric diction course for singers. Fundamentals for singing in English and Italian, including symbols and sounds of the International Phonetic Alphabet as applied to English and Italian art song and operatic repertoire.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to present more sophisticated musical selections and will be graded more strictly on their class presentations in accordance with their level of technical and musical accomplishment. This will apply to their analyses of listening assignments as well, which will be expected to be in greater depth and detail. In addition, they will be required to perform/record one additional song or aria in Italian and/or English to demonstrate advanced proficiency in lyric diction.

Student learning Outcomes

  • The student will be able to use and apply IPA to reading, pronunciation, and transcription in English and Italian.
  • The student will be able to describe articulators and their use in accurate and stylistic lyric diction.
  • The student will be able to demonstrate accurate and stylistic pronunciation of English and Italian both within and outside of art song or operatic repertoire.
  • The student will be able to discuss physiological production of vowel and consonant sounds.
  • The student will be able to identify and correct errors in the lyric pronunciation of English and Italian as both a listener and in one’s own self-performance practice.

  • Drill sessions, both at the board and orally
  • Preparation and performance of songs and/or arias in English and Italian
