Intermediate Quechua Language and Culture I


Course Description

A continuation of Elementary Quechua Language and Culture II focusing on students' listening, pronunciation, and writing skills. Students will also be exposed to texts written in Quechua for which they will prepare basic translations in English (and/or Spanish). Conducted in English and Quechua.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Recognize and understand linguistic and cultural diversity in Quechua-speaking regions. 2. Develop a basic knowledge of literature (oral histories, traditional stories) in Quechua. 3. Understand and apply rules of pronunciation of the Cusco- Collao variety of Quechua. 4. Understand and apply rules of word formation, including particles for adverbials, negation, and discourse. 5. Understand and apply rules of sentence formation, including the structure of complex sentences. 6. Produce and understand conversational dialogue in Quechua using a variety of vocabulary. 7. Read and analyze texts written in Quechua. 8. Produce basic translations of Quechua texts into English (or Spanish).
