Semester Course Offered

Offered fall

Grading System

A - F (Traditional)

Course Objectives

Students completing this course should be able to perform in the capacity of an animal nutritionist and be able to: • Describe the nature, function and importance of nutrients in feeds. • Understand the function and importance of digestive organs and metabolic processes in monogastrics and ruminants. • Understand the use of chemical, biological and economic criteria to evaluate and select feeds in ration formulation. • Describe the nutritional characteristics of feedstuffs and rations for animals. Emphasis is placed on commercial livestock species. • Identify factors affecting animal requirements for nutrients, their determination and use in ration formulation. • Evaluate rations for swine, cattle (beef and dairy), horses, and sheep by comparing nutrient content and intake characteristics with animal requirements. • Formulate profitable rations using both mathematical and computer methods for swine, cattle (beef and dairy), horses, and sheep.
