Course Description
Students will learn to identify wetland wildlife, delineate wetlands, understand wetland hydrology, and manage a variety of wetland habitats for game and non-game wildlife.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to complete an extensive
class project that requires determination of carrying capacity
of a wetland system for migrating waterfowl, as well as
management scenarios to optimize habitat quality for waterfowl
and other waterbirds.

Course Objectives
This course is designed to train students to understand basic ecology and management of wetland habitats. The course will include information on identifying wetland wildlife, delineating and classifying wetlands, hydrology, moist-soil management, management of agricultural wetlands, green-tree reservoir management, and estimation of waterfowl carrying capacity. The course contents will help prepare you as a professional by providing you with fundamental information on ways that wildlife biologists and land managers effectively manage wetland habitats for a variety of wildlife species.
Topical Outline
- Understand basics of wetland ecology and management of wetland systems - Identify wetlands, classify wetlands, and understand regulations affecting wetlands - Use knowledge of conservation programs to improve wetland management - Assess waterfowl carrying capacity for different wetland habitats - Identify common birds, mammals, and amphibians inhabiting wetland environments
