Course Objectives

This course uses real-world examples of the interaction between humans and the environment. For example, we go into detail and visit the old White Dam located in UGA’s Whitehall Forest. This structure’s center span was removed in July 2018. The Middle Oconee River is now able to flow freely after over 100 years. There are many teaching points to be made by visiting such a site. Examples are a discussion of impoundments and how they alter the fluvial dynamics of a stream. Additionally, their impact on the stream ecology is a key element of any discussion. As a geoarchaeology course, one must mention the human historical dimension of the site. The removal process considered the previous role of the dam in the history of Athens. The dam provided waterpower to generate electricity for nearby mills which, in turn, “powered” the local economy for decades. The remaining portion of the dam recalls its role in the recent past. This is only one example of how environmental awareness is integrated into the course.
