Course Description
Quantitative methods in hydrology and hydraulics for water resource management. Hydrology topics include precipitation, rainfall losses, unit hydrographs, flood routing, statistical hydrology, and design of stormwater control measures. Hydraulics topics include open channel flow, floodplain analysis, and design of open channels. Common hydrologic (HEC-HMS) and hydraulic (HEC-RAS) models are introduced.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students are required to conduct a literature review and write a report on a topic of their choosing that is related to the course content. All students do a group project, but the graduate students also present the results of this work to the class.

Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of the course: • Students will understand and correctly apply engineering methods for hydrologic analysis, including specification of design storms from IDF curves, estimation of runoff losses, and unit hydrograph development and application. Students will use these methods to design stormwater control structures. • Students will understand and correctly apply engineering methods for surface water hydraulic analysis, including shallow surface flow and flow in open channels. Students will use these methods to design open channels and storm sewers. • Finally, students will garner experience in HEC-HMS and HEC-RAS hydrologic and hydraulic models, including using these tools for flood risk analyses and design of flood mitigation measures. • Graduate-level students will gain a deeper understanding of hydrologic and hydraulic processes, implications, and broader implementation and practice through a detailed search of classic and contemporary literature on a course-related topic. Students will demonstrate this new knowledge by summarizing their findings in a literature review paper.
