Mechanics of Jets and Plumes


Course Description

Advanced fluid dynamic principles applied to engineered flows. Topics covered include mixing, design of jets and plumes, effects of ambient flows, stratification, and turbulence on jets and plumes. Advanced treatment of instability and turbulence theory as they pertain to engineered flows. Extensive numerical project focused on applying theory to real-world implementation.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1) apply basic fluid mechanics principles to advection- diffusion problems 2) understand basic concepts of turbulence 3) design jet discharge to meet specific dilution criteria 4) design plume discharge to meet specific dilution criteria 5) understand the effects of ambient flows on jets and plumes 6) understand contemporary issues for waste discharge
