Course Description
An introduction to the international business of motion pictures with a primary focus on marketing campaigns and distribution strategies, taking into account the social, political, and economic climates of various territories worldwide. International production finance will also be discussed.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to complete a paper on a
topic of their choosing based on international theatrical
feature film marketing and sales trends. A thorough
integration and critique of course materials and research on
multiple platforms and global territories must be presented
from a critical/cultural perspective.

Course Objectives
Students will learn how to analyze a film from a marketing and distribution perspective. Films screened at the festival will be used as models for creating campaign projects. Students will also learn pitching techniques.
Topical Outline
Introduction to international film and television sales. Introduction to the Cannes Film Market. The role of the producer, sales agent, and distributor in the international film marketplace. International marketing and distribution strategies (motion picture, theatrical and other media). Cultural, social, and political impacts on film releasing strategy. The economics of the distribution deal (exhibitor and distributor; distributor and filmmaker). International co-production treaties. International governments’ production subsidies.
