Sports Broadcast and Production


Course Description

Training in production of sports events for mass distribution. In addition to developing technical proficiencies, students will learn to prepare for and practice on-air skills such as sideline reporting and play-by-play in simulated and live experiences. The course will include study of the evolution of sports broadcast forms and functions.

Course Objectives

Students will develop an understanding of relationships between sports broadcasters and sports organizations; current trends in sports event production and technology; the history of sports media partnerships; the modern economics of sports broadcast media; the evolution of mass-media audiences; and trends in second-screen participation. Outcomes: Students will demonstrate the following competencies: broadcast production, including basic lighting, editing, choosing proper context and backdrops, control, cameras and grips, graphics and chyron operation; press conferences best practices; on-air standups, reporting, interviewing, play-by-pay, analysis and event recaps; event preparation; and social media integration with broadcast.
