Course Description
Open only to students with no prior coursework either in high
school or in college. Development of listening comprehension,
speaking, reading, and writing skills. Fundamentals of Spanish
grammar and pronunciation. Introduction to Spanish-speaking
cultures. Given in Spanish.

Student Learning Outcomes
- Students will understand spoken Spanish in simple conversations.
- Students will ask and answer questions on a variety of everyday topics, describe people and places, and narrate recurring events.
- Students will read, understand and restate the main ideas and some details of short-printed texts such as announcements, newspaper articles, advertisements, brochures, etc.
- Students will write short narratives about present events.
- Students will have a basic knowledge of cultural facts and vocabulary concerning home life, recreational activities, the extended family, geography, environment, some knowledge of cities in the Hispanic world and the presence of Hispanics in the United States.

- Functions: naming objects; greeting people; asking and answering
questions; describing; making polite requests; expressing
thanks; narrating and describing in the past; giving directions;
expressing opinions and reactions.
Topics and Vocabulary: cognates; family members; numbers;
