Studies in French-Language Film and Media


Course Description

Introduction to French and Francophone cinema and other media, from the Lumière Brothers to contemporary productions. Taught in French.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
The course requirements for undergraduate and graduate students are: class participation and up to three multimedia projects, including video presentations and the building of an online knowledge base. Graduate students will be evaluated and graded according to higher standards. Requirements for the multimedia projects will be different for undergraduate and graduate students. For example, undergraduate students will produce a 10-minute video presentation, and graduate students will produce a 20-minute video presentation.

  • Students will learn the history, theory, and analysis of the production, exhibition, and distribution of French and Francophone cinema and media.
  • Students will gain a grasp of generic, technological, and thematic transformations over time and space via screenings and required secondary readings.
