Course Description

Provides guidance on information and skills needed to become a successful professional scientist. The course will introduce new Integrated Life Sciences (ILS) graduate students to research opportunities, facilities, and resources at UGA; grant writing strategies and opportunities; and laboratory safety. The course includes an introduction to professional ethics and responsibilities.

  • This 7-week discussion-based class provides guidance on all the activities needed to become a successful professional scientist. The course focuses on developing conscious and active strategies for transitioning into graduate education and a research-based academic environment.

  • Introduction to Graduate Education and University Culture Facilities and Safety Official Policies on Ethics The Successful Researcher–Tools and Skills for Scientific Research Online Resources and Information Technology for the Research Scientist Funding Opportunities/Grant Writing Non-traditional Opportunities for Ph.D.s This course will be taught by one instructor, usually the ILS Graduate Coordinator, during the first seven weeks of the fall semester. Instructional materials will include, but not be limited to, the primary scientific literature, other published articles or written material, online resources, and videos. This topical outline is the general plan for the course; the exact order and specific content of each lecture will be announced to the class in advance by the instructor.
