Group Exercise Instruction


Course Description

Knowledge and practical experience regarding teaching and evaluating group exercise classes varying in format, such as high/low cardio, step, kickboxing, sports conditioning, water exercise, indoor cycling, yoga, Pilates, and muscle conditioning. Upon completion, students will be prepared to take a national certification exam.

Course Objectives

* Apply fundamental exercise physiology principles to a group exercise class/session. * Apply the concepts of muscle balance, biomechanical aspects of movement and fitness-for-health principles within a group exercise setting. * Discuss how principles of exercise are related to contemporary group exercise formats such as high/low impact aerobics, step aerobics, Pilates, muscle conditioning, cycle classes, kickboxing, boot camp, water exercise, etc. * Discuss the fundamentals of music, including beat selection and music phrasing as it applies to the choreography of various exercise class formats. * Create, lead, and instruct group exercise classes of various contemporary formats. * Demonstrate awareness and proficiency in modifying group exercise instruction due to chronic conditions (e.g., knee pain) or conditioning levels (e.g., beginning exerciser) * Utilize an evaluation tool for group exercise programming to determine if the programs are safe and effective.
