Course Description

Lesson planning, implementation, and formative classroom assessments to foster equity-orientated social studies classrooms. Applied teaching tasks will demonstrate competencies in the supervised, companion field experience.

Student learning Outcomes

  • Analyze the sources for the selection of social studies content and classroom activities that are appropriate and differentiated for students in 6-12 grade classrooms.
  • Apply social studies content standards when designing lessons, planning curriculum, and implementing their assessments.
  • Apply backwards design and an equity-orientation for lesson planning to formatively assess students within the planning, teaching, and assessment cycle.
  • Design formative assessments based on knowledge of their characteristics, uses, and limitations to promote student growth, match instructional goals, and foster equitable classroom engagement.
  • Incorporate the unique cognitive, physical, social, emotional, and moral characteristics of students in grades 6-12 as individuals and members of groups within their lesson planning, instruction, and assessment.
  • Engage in ongoing forms of inquiry about their practice using instructional analysis tools and evidence from 6-12 students’ classroom assessments.
