Course Description
This course builds on Introduction to Healthcare Management, with a broad examination of the operational and leadership imperatives of healthcare administrators; and an analysis of current issues confronting today’s manager/leaders. Topics covered are based on the core competencies set forth by the Healthcare Leadership Alliance.

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Understand the specific domains and general competencies needed by health care administrators as set forth by the Healthcare Leadership Alliance. 2. Articulate the notable differences between health care delivery organizations and how they affect health care system constituents, and the management strategies, tactics and operations of these disparate HCOs. 3. Explain the underlying operational issues of balancing community, patient, staff, economic, legal, ethical and organizational obligations involved in health care administration. 4. Analyze the role of insurance in the health care system and explain how payer sources affect the revenue cycle. 5. Understand the basic elements and principles of negotiation and conflict resolution. 6. Generate appropriate marketing strategies and tactics for a health care organization. 7. Define the key steps in strategic planning and formulate a basic strategic plan for a health care organization. 8. Discuss current topical issues involving management and leadership in health care organizations.
