Course Description

A continuation of Elementary Spanish I. Emphasis on conversational Spanish. Development of listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Fundamentals of Spanish grammar and pronunciation. Study of Spanish-speaking cultures. Given in Spanish.

This course will be taught 95% or more online. Assignments, discussions, and student works are managed online according to the Guidelines for Online Teaching and Digital Literacy of the Romance Languages Department.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will understand spoken Spanish in simple conversations and be able to ask and answer questions on a variety of everyday topics, describe people and places, and narrate events in the present and the past.
  • Students will write short narrative compositions about present and past events.
  • Students will have a basic knowledge of cultural facts and vocabulary concerning cultural traditions, food and dining customs, geography, environment and travel about countries in the Hispanic world.
  • Students will be aware of the contributions and presence of Hispanics in the United States.

Topical Outline

  • Functions: talking about the past, present and future; influencing others; agreeing and disagreeing; describing and explaining; expressing courtesy and respect; expressing emotional involvement; giving commands; expressing wishes; making requests and recommendations; advising; talking about what you would do/should have done; ordering and making polite requests. Topics and Vocabulary: parts of the body; medical situations; places; stores; geographical features; professions; social life; advice; money; business; real estate; travel; restaurants; hotels; sports; relationships; pastimes. Grammar: future; superlatives; present subjunctive (in noun, adjective, and adverbial clauses); commands; present perfect (indicative and subjunctive); past subjunctive; conditional; if-clauses; subjunctive after certain conjunctions. Pronunciation: Attention will be given to vowels, consonants, stress, and intonation throughout the course. Culture: Cultural material on customs, geography, history, literature, art, architecture, and politics of the Spanish- speaking world will be incorporated into each unit.
