Neuroanatomy


Course Description

The anatomy of the nervous system. Most of the focus will be on the central nervous system, but peripheral systems will also be discussed. A major goal of the course is to supplement instruction on structural neuro-anatomy with a strong functional component. The course will also include the discussion of techniques and strategies that are used in research aimed at exploring neurobiology.

This course will be most appropriate for graduate students participating in biomedical research programs. Previous coursework in neuroscience, physiology, or behavioral biology will be beneficial.

Course Objectives

This course is an advanced neuroanatomy course designed for instruction of basic science graduate students interested in the study of the nervous system. Grading will be accomplished by examination, quizzes, written papers, and manuscript review. Learning outcomes will include development of an active approach to understanding neuroanatomy and the functions associated with various neuroanatomical substrates. This active approach to learning neuroanatomy that incorporates new information pertinent to the evolving understanding of neuroanatomical connectivity and the neurochemical basis for interactions between populations of neurons.
