Psychology of Music


Course Description

Acoustical and psychological aspects of music with emphasis upon problems of perception, experimental aesthetics, musical function, measurement and diagnosis of musical ability.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will be required to write a paper on a topic of wider scope than undergraduates and will give an oral report.

Topical Outline

  • Learn about the physiological aspects of the affective response to music, including musical preferences as a social phenomenon and the influence thereon
  • Study basic learning theories and their applications in music
  • Learn about the psychoacoustical foundations of music and how these relate to practical musical performances
