Course Description
This service-learning, practicum-based course will provide supervised teaching experience in public school and/or community musical settings. The course will emphasize practical teaching skills, including lesson planning, sequencing, communication, motivation, and assessment. Seminar discussions and faculty observation and feedback will build on the weekly practicum.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will have to provide additional videos and written evaluations of their teaching.

Non-Traditional Format
Course includes a service-learning project during the semester that either employs skills or knowledge learned in the course or teaches new skills or knowledge related to course objectives. The course uses service-learning as the primary pedagogical tool for teaching course objectives. Students will work on a comprehensive project(s) and may be required to spend considerable time outside the classroom. Students will be engaged in the service-learning component for approximately 75- 100% of overall instructional time.

Course Objectives
Students taking this course will: • gain teaching experience in school or community setting appropriate to their skills and background • plan, teach, and assess lessons or classes on a weekly basis during the semester • develop and refine skills in lesson planning, sequencing, communication, application of learning theories and learning styles, motivation, assessment, and business practices • assess and employ appropriate teaching materials, including relevant technologies • explore specific problems of teaching related to the instrument, ensemble, class, age, and/or skill level of the assignment • document their teaching (via video) and observe with faculty and peers • critically reflect on teaching tendencies, strengths, and weaknesses • gain an understanding of service learning and the role music teaching can play in the community
