Music Skills for Therapists


Course Description

Skill development in voice and on social instruments for use in the therapeutic treatment of various age groups. Includes improvisation, transposition, and self-accompanied performance of a variety of repertoire.

Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will write a substantive paper which meets the publication standards of the American Music Therapy Association, and present a class lecture on the chosen topic.

Course Objectives

1. Be able to improvise on instruments of choice to elicit responses. 2. Be able to adapt accompanying techniques for different age groups. 3. Be able to adapt for different vocal ranges via transposing of different instruments.


Topical Outline

1. Lead group in singing, using standard conducting techniques; teaching new songs, including harmony songs. 2. Lead and accompany group singing with autoharp, guitar, and piano. 3. Utilize and memorize repertoire spanning several decades.
