Advanced Environmental Air Quality


Course Description

Advanced topics of air pollution, from both national and global perspectives. Areas of emphasis include the meteorology and modeling of, sources of, elements of, effects of, measurement and monitoring of, and policies relating to air pollution. Case studies from the peer-review literature will be included.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: • Critically review the peer-review literature on state-of-the- art research in the topic areas covered in this class. • Analyze and synthesize the sources and emissions of the main pollutants presented and discuss their ambient concentrations in various parts of the world. • Apply important concepts and methods concerning the quantification of human exposure to air pollution and the assessment of its effects on health, and to integrate factors that determine individual susceptibility to air pollution into this application. • Analyze, apply, and integrate environmental equity into air pollution and human health issues, including delving into case studies that highlight the unequal distribution of health risks due to air pollution both within and among nations. • Apply and analyze methods for quantifying the health burden of air pollution that trigger policy reactions. • Apply, analyze, and synthesize the material presented in developing air quality standards and other policy tools. • Apply the material covered to cases of indoor air pollution – especially to the conditions prevalent in developing countries owing to the indoor combustion of solid fuels. • Develop a research proposal.
