Trends in special education, characteristics, and needs of those classified as exceptional, curriculum development, and intervention strategies. Mainstreamed and self-contained settings will be discussed. Students will take part in music therapy in community-based settings.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students: Graduate students will be required to write a paper on a topic of wider scope than undergraduates and will give an oral report.

Students will be able to develop, implement, and reflect on applied service-learning placement at music therapy practicum site in the community.
Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the legislation and concepts concerning the inclusion of students with disabilities in the public schools on the written midterm and final exams, and during class discussions.
Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the characteristics and needs of children and adolescent populations with various exceptionalities.
Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to plan and write music therapy goals objectives.
Students will be able to demonstrate music therapy techniques and behavioral management skills during class role play scenarios with peers in order to facilitate music therapy activities with children and adolescents with various intellectual, physical, and behavioral deficits.
Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of professional collaboration and consultation concepts with music educators and other professionals in the public school system.
Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the needs and music therapy techniques for gifted children.
