Emphasis is placed on literary and cultural skills to promote students' ability to read and analyze literary texts, while concentrating on expressing themselves accurately in both oral and written Portuguese. Given in Portuguese.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to recognize and discuss major works, authors, and movements in Brazilian literature. Through readings, class discussions, and analytical writing, students will identify key themes, historical contexts, and literary styles that define Brazilian literary traditions. In both oral and written communication, students will organize and express ideas with clarity and precision appropriate to academic and cultural contexts.
  • Students will be able to access, interpret, and engage critically with current news and media sources from Brazil. By analyzing articles, videos, and social media content on cultural and social topics, students will strengthen their understanding of contemporary Brazilian society and develop the ability to express informed opinions in Portuguese through written and oral activities.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a deepened understanding of Brazilian cultural perspectives that encourages openness and critical self-reflection. Through comparative discussions, presentations, and reflective writing, students will analyze how cultural values and attitudes shape worldviews and interpersonal interactions, adapting tone and register to communicate respectfully and effectively in diverse contexts.
  • Students will be able to analyze and interpret behaviors and cultural practices in order to explain and dispel misconceptions and stereotypes about Brazilian culture. By engaging in guided discussions, research-based projects, and visual or written analyses, students will develop culturally sensitive communication that promotes understanding across cultural boundaries.
  • Students will be able to deliver organized, detailed, and culturally informed presentations on Brazilian literary and cultural topics. Through structured oral and written assignments, students will present information clearly and coherently in paragraph-length discourse, employing appropriate linguistic structures, visual aids, and stylistic conventions for specific audiences and communicative purposes.

  • Portuguese colonial influence in Brazil and Lusophone Africa.
  • Major themes discussed in the literature and cultures of the Portuguese-speaking world.
  • Fundamentals of writing research papers.
