Course Description
Emphasis is placed on literary and cultural skills to promote
students' ability to read and analyze literary texts, while
concentrating on expressing themselves accurately in both oral
and written Portuguese. Given in Portuguese.

Student Learning Outcomes
Students will process a depth of understanding that develops openness and promotes an examination of values and attitudes.
Students will examine and understand behaviors in order to explain and dispel misconceptions and stereotypes about Brazilian culture.
Students will recognize works and authors of Brazilian literature.
Students will become familiar with and have discussions about recent news on Brazilian media about a variety of current topics related to culture.
Students will deliver detailed and organized presentations on literary and cultural topics, in paragraphs and using various time frames through spoken and written language.
Topical Outline
Representative literary texts from the five literary genres:
poetry, drama, essay, novel, and short story. Portuguese
colonial influence in Brazil and Lusophone Africa. Major themes
discussed in the literature and cultures of the Portuguese-
speaking world. Fundamentals of writing research papers.
