Service-Learning Project Management


Course Description

The research and design phase of the Institute for Leadership Advancement’s service-learning project component for Leonard Leadership Scholars. The curriculum will focus on how to manage a change initiative within a non-profit organization. Topics will include qualitative research, benchmarking, project management, and problem solving.

Non-Traditional Format

Course includes a service-learning project during the semester that either employs skills or knowledge learned in the course or teaches new skills or knowledge related to course objectives. Students will be involved in the planning and implementation of the project(s) and may spend time outside of the classroom. Students will be engaged in the service-learning component for approximately 25-50% of the overall instruction time.

Course Objectives

The objective of this course is to teach skills related to effective internal and external consulting in order to facilitate the service-learning project requirement for ILA Leonard Leadership Scholars. As such, the course will count toward the nine hours of certificate elective hours required for students in the program. Students will work with a non- profit in Athens or Atlanta as consultants helping the organization in a meaningful and sustainable way and based on the needs of the particular organization. In this class, the students work to develop goals as well as a project and implementation schedule which they will implement during Organizational Leadership. The projects are designed to give students real-world experience and practice using the leadership skills developed in Leadership and Personal Development. Each student is expected to be an active participant in the project.


Topical Outline

Topics will include project overview, problem identification, creative problem solving, qualitative research and data gathering, benchmarking, preparing client feedback, implementation, and project management. In addition, two-four classes will involve speakers who are either alumni or corporate sponsors. These speakers will discuss their experiences with project management and consulting.
