Course Objectives
Honors coursework ideally utilizes more individualized and innovative approaches or with greater focus on research, professionalization, critical writing, or increased interaction with faculty members. Assignments will require a substantial engagement with the course subject and material and further the discussion of that material between the faculty member and the student. Students taking this class will be expected to leave with the ability to do the following: They will begin to learn the vocabulary of medicine, recognize common disease conditions on the gross, microscopic and, in some cases (e.g., cancer), on the sub-microscopic level. They will be able to read, explain, and critique lay literature about diseases. They will be introduced to and expected to know basic underlying reasons for disruption in normal blood supply to cells, the differences in injury depending on the agent that caused it, the types of cells used in inflammation and how they behave, and what happens when normal regulated cell growth goes awry.
