Course Description
From manuscripts and published texts to visual arts and new media, humanities research is simultaneously traditional and groundbreaking. Students will develop the skills needed to do research in the humanities and learn the history of and current issues in the dissemination and organization of information.
Additional Requirements for Graduate Students:
Graduate students will have additional assignment requirements, with a more intensive final project to learn and develop the skills needed to do research in the humanities and learn the history of and current issues in the dissemination and organization of information. This course will also count towards credit for the Digital Humanities Certificate.

Course Objectives
• To find, evaluate critically, and use ethically information in the humanities in order to produce well-researched scholarship using appropriate sources; • To understand how information is published, organized, and retrieved while also examining the ways that new technologies are changing the questions humanities scholars ask; • To become proficient in using print and online research tools and have extensive hands-on experience with sources in a variety of formats; • To gain experience using archival sources and to investigate local collections for potential DIGI capstone projects.

• History of visual communication and publishing • Core concepts in information organization and retrieval • Research tools, databases, and search strategies in the humanities • Archival research skills using the collections of Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library and the Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies • Research with special formats collections, including the Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection, maps, and government documents • Intellectual property, fair use, and orphan works • The crisis in scholarly book publishing and new venues for scholarly discussion
