Elementary Spanish I


Course Description

Open only to students with no prior coursework either in high school or in college. Development of listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Fundamentals of Spanish grammar and pronunciation. Introduction to Spanish-speaking cultures. Given in Spanish.

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Students will understand spoken Spanish in simple conversations directed to the students.
  • Students will ask and answer questions on a variety of everyday topics, describe people and places, and narrate recurring events.
  • Students will read, understand and restate the main ideas and some details of short-printed texts such as announcements, newspaper articles, advertisements, brochures, etc.
  • Students will write short narratives about present events.
  • Students will have a basic knowledge of cultural facts and vocabulary concerning home life, recreational activities, the extended family, geography, environment, some knowledge of cities in the Hispanic world and the presence of Hispanics in the United States.

Topical Outline

  • Functions: naming objects; greeting people; asking and answering questions; describing; making polite requests; expressing thanks; narrating and describing in the past; giving directions; expressing opinions and reactions.
  • Topics and Vocabulary: cognates; family members; numbers; academic subjects; colors; descriptive adjectives; interrogatives; foods; communications; directions; weather; conditions; the home.
  • Grammar: present tense regular, irregular and stem-changing verbs; articles and gender; agreement; subject, object and reflexive pronouns; adjectives; possessives; demonstratives; ser and estar; saber and conocer; the preterit; gustar and verbs like it; imperfect and preterit; expressions with tener; prepositions.
  • Pronunciation: Attention will be given to vowels, consonants, stress, and intonation throughout the course.
  • Culture: Cultural materials on customs, geography, history, literature, art, architecture, and politics of the Spanish- speaking world will be incorporated into each unit.
